The Basics

The allure of New Orleans is the food, music, culture, architecture, and people. To do New Orleans right, you should get a taste of each of these.

Food: Dine at a trendy restaurant (not a touristy one). There are hundreds here. NOLA Eater offers great recommendations. While you’re here, you gotta try a few dishes that are unique to New Orleans: po-boys, gumbo/etouffee/jambalaya, BBQ shrimp or shrimp & grits, boudin, oysters/crawfish (depending on season). Eat red beans & rice on Monday.

Music: Dance to live music somewhere. Go to a show at Tipitinas, walk up Frenchmen St, check out the WWOZ Livewire. You probably won’t recognize most names of bands/artists, so just go to any show and enjoy. Choice paralysis? Preservation Hall for classical jazz.

Culture: Join a social aid & pleasure club second line, learn what Mardi Gras is truly like in New Orleans, or attend one of the many festivals in the city. JAMNOLA is an immersive art museum that’ll give you a fast overview of New Orleans culture.

Architecture: Get lost in the French Quarter (avoid Bourbon St at all costs). Look at the color of the homes, the old brick, the ironwork.

People: Talk to strangers at the bar, say hello to people you pass in the street, people watch, join a second line. See who you meet.
